Business Case - overview

Purpose:

The purpose of the Business Case theme is to establish the mechanism to judge whether the project is and remains desirable, viable and achievable.

It is a PRINCE2 principle, that a project must have continued business justification. The Business justification is the reason for the project. Once the justification changes or disapears, the project should be stopped or changed. 

When describing delivery of the project, there are 3 results:

Output – the specialist products delivered from the project 

Outcome – the result of the change which is brought about by the use of the project outputs (products)

Benefit – stakeholder’s perception of a measurable improvement in the business from an outcome resulting from the project.

There are many and varied reasons for projects but some broad types can be identified including the compulsory project; not-for-profit project; evolving project; the customer / supplier project; and the multi-organization project. Each will affect the objectives and how they will be measured.
